At Innisfree I learned a lot of new skills and hobbies. Learning to trust Godby Fatima When I was first asked to participate in the IVEP interview to come to the USA/Canada I felt so excited and at the same time afraid because of the tragedy of September 11th. I knew that would be a big challenge so what I did was put my trust in God. My work placement took me to Innisfree Village for the full year. I experienced the warmth and love of the people in Innisfree even though it took some time to adjust to American life. I had to get used to the climate, the food, and the language. It was a struggle just understanding what people were trying to say to me. The good thing is at Innisfree I learned a lot of new skills and hobbies. I learned to work in a garden, the woodshop, the kitchen and also pottery. The way Americans act was also interesting and new to me. For a greeting they just say "Hi" and that's all. Then they are off somewhere. They might not even stop, but just say it when they pass. After a while I understood that is the way they are - always in a hurry, no time to waste - that is why you will find most Americans in the car with a coffee mug! Not even time to take a drink! I like the way Americans celebrate big holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas too. In Virginia, I liked the change of seasons the best - going from summer to winter - watching the leaves change colors and then the winter snow and after that the new leaves in the spring. |
