Hosts

MCC seeks host families who can offer IVEPers a wide variety of experiences and who are open to learning and growing themselves, through their participation as a host for IVEP.  Hosts broaden their view of other cultures and gain a better understanding of their own country as they see it through the eyes of someone experiencing it for the first time.  They also see that the language of love is global and that "In Christ there is no east or west, in Him no south or north."

How can I become a host for an IVEP participant?

Send an email to ivep@mcc.org and we will be in conversation with you.

What are the host requirements?

Hosts need to be active in their church community and open to learning from others.  They need to be willing to share their lives with the IVEPer and be intentional in setting aside some time to informally “check-in” with the IVEPer, just like you would with your own children.  There is not an “ideal” host family – each one has their own unique way of interacting with the IVEPers and family make-up.  Some are young families, some are middle aged, and some are retired folks.

Is the IVEPer considered a tenant or part of the family?

We hope that the IVEPer will be considered one of the family, not just a tenant or border, and be invited to participate in daily family life.

How will the IVEPer integrate into our family life?

We ask that you include the IVEPer in your family just as you would a family member.  Show them some of the local sites and attractions.  Take them to local concerts, ball-games, fairs or community events.  Include them in your family life, whether it’s by picking berries, going out to eat or camping for the weekend.

When does the IVEP year begin and end?

The IVEP year begins in mid-August and runs until mid-July the following year.

How does MCC support the IVEPer throughout the year?

Every year, approximately 60 young adults from around the world participate in IVEP. Of those, half are placed in Canada and half are placed in the US. Throughout the year participants come together for three week long conferences: orientation, a midyear conference focusing on peace building and year end.

In Canada IVEPers are supported by Provincial coordinators who plan regular events, and are in regular contact with hosts and sponsors.

In the US IVEPers are supported by Regional coordinators and their National counterpart. (Please see the Host and Partner Agencies manual located at the top of this page for more information)
